Baseball Drops Two Games Late at Wright State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Youngstown State baseball team dropped a pair of games that were decided late at Wright State on Saturday, falling 7-6 and 10-7.

The Raiders, who moved into a tie for first place in the Horizon League with the doubleheader sweep, got a walkoff win in game one. Youngstown State led 6-4 after five innings in game two before Wright State rallied with four runs in the sixth.

Anthony Rohan doubled twice and tripled in the opener, and Trey Bridis and Alex Larivee both homered for the Penguins in game two.

Rohan's triple led off game one, and he scored one batter later on Lorenzo Arcuri's ground out. That lead was erased quickly as J.D. Orr hit an RBI double three batters into the bottom of the first, and Adrian Marquez's two-run single later in the inning put the Raiders ahead 3-1.

Youngstown State's first rally of the contest came in the third inning when it went ahead 4-3. Shane Willoughby doubled and scored on a wild pitch, and Andrew Kendrick and Bridis both walked and scored on a Web Charles single.

Wright State answered immediately again with two runs in the bottom of the inning as Orr scored on a wild pitch and Seth Gray stole third and went the final 90 feet on an ensuing throwing error. That put the Raiders ahead 5-4, and a sacrifice fly by Orr in the fourth made it 6-4.

The Penguins knotted the score at 6-6 in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally. Kyle Benyo started the offense with a single, and Rohan followed with a double. After a walk to Arcuri, Willoughby followed with a two-run single up the middle. The Penguins left the bases loaded in the sixth, and they had one hit over the final three innings.

Matt Morrow hit a one-out triple and came in to score on an error in the ninth as Wright State won 7-6.

Joe King pitched the final 5-2/3 innings out of the bullpen for Youngstown State and surrendered two runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits. He appeared in relief of starter Kevin Yarabinec, who pitched 2-2/3 innings.

In game two, Wright State put up a crooked number again in the first inning of game two and took a 4-0 lead. Youngstown State went on to score the next six runs of the game, and its rally started in the second inning when Anthony Santoro doubled home Kendrick with two outs. Larivee's home run in the fourth made the score 4-2, and Bridis' grand slam with nobody out in the fifth put the Penguins up 6-4.

Wright State scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-6 lead, and Morrow played a big role again. He hit a two-run double that plated the go-ahead run, and he later scored on a two-out single that increased the margin to two. Youngstown State cut the deficit in half when Arcuri doubled and scored on Nico Padovan's ground out, but Wright State added insurance with a run in both the seventh and eighth innings.

YSU starter Zack Minney pitched five complete innings and into the sixth, and he was charged with six runs. Joel Hake was charged with the loss in his 2/3 of an inning.

Youngstown State will play at Toledo on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
