Penguins Split Pair Of Matches On California Trip

Riverside, Calif. - The Youngstown State men's tennis dropped a tough decision to Villanova before rebounding to defeat UC Riverside on a busy Sunday in California.

YSU (11-5) had its five-match winning streak snapped in the loss to the Wildcats in a match at Orange Coast College. Later in the day the Guins defeated UC Riverside for the second time this year, 4-0.

Against Villanova, YSU split the six singles matches after losing the doubles point. Winning singles contests were Mitch Maroscher at No. 1, Gabriel Tolesani at No. 5 and Luke Purser at No. 6.

Marsocher won his match 6-2, 6-1, Tolesani won 6-0, 6-0 and Purser won 6-4, 7-6. The match was decided at No. 3 where VU's Tyler Roth defeated Danylo Veremeichuk 6-7, 7-6, and 6-4 in a hard-fought decision.

In the afternoon, YSU responded by taking the doubles point against the Highlanders and winning the first three concluded singles matches. Winning for the Guins were Thomas Rodrigues at No. 3, Veremeichuk at No. 4 and Tolesani at No. 6. The Penguins earned the doubles point by claiming two of the three contests.

YSU concludes its week-long trip to California with a Friday match against Wabash College.
