Pittsburgh outscored the Youngstown State baseball team 11-1 over the final six innings to beat the Penguins 17-5 on Wednesday evening at Eastwood Field.

The Panthers scored six unearned runs in the second inning, but the Penguins battled back to get within two at 6-4 after three innings. Pitt scored five times in the fourth to regain control at 11-4 and had three two-run innings.

Gerrad Rohan went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Andrew Kendrick went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI to lead YSU. The No. 2-4 batters in Pitt's lineup each had three hits, and the Panthers registered 20 hits as a team. YSU's pitching staff that was limited due to a heavy schedule this week issued six walks and hit seven batters.

YSU starter Michael Semonsen worked around three hits to keep the Panthers scoreless in the first, but the Panthers followed an error with seven straight base hits in the second inning to go up 6-0.

Kendrick and Rohan started the bottom of the second with back-to-back doubles, and Rohan scored on a passed ball with two outs to make the score 6-2. Kendrick then singled in Web Charles, and Rohan brought in Billy Salem on a fielder's choice in the third inning as YSU cut the deficit to 4-2.

Pitt answered with five runs of five hits and two walks in the fifth to go up 11-4, and David Yanni's two-run double in the fifth put the Panthers ahead 13-4. Rohan singled in Charles in the bottom of the fifth for YSU's final run, and Pittsburgh added two runs in the seven and two more in the eighth for the final tally.

Youngstown State continues nine-game homestand on Friday with a doubleheader against Wright State beginning at 1 p.m.
