Detroit, Mich. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team won singles matches at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to earn a 4-3 victory over Detroit on Saturday night at Franklin Athletic Club.
The Penguins (5-11 overall and 1-1 in the Horizon League) had wins by Luke Purser, Yossi Dahan, Bassem El Mekawi and Agustin Reyes to earn the win. Purser won in three sets at No. 3 to clinch the match for Guins against the Titans (3-11, 0-2).
Detroit won two of three doubles matches winning 6-4 at No. 1 and 6-1 at No. 2. Mekawi and Dahan won at No. 3 by a 6-3 score.
In singles play, the Penguins won the first three completed singles matches to take a 3-1 lead before the Titans won the next two matches.
YSU's first point of the night came when Mekawi won 6-3, 6-1 over Adam Zychowicz at No. 5. Dahan picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Ismail Kadyrov at No. 4 and then Reyes beat Kacper Stelmaszak by a 6-3, 6-3 score.
At No. 1, Hugo Morth lost to Patryk Koscielski 6-4, 6-4 and at No. 2, Matthew Kritzinger dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 contest to Nathan Ponton.
In the deciding match, Purser won the first set 7-6 (4) before dropping the second set 6-1 to Nicholas Solarwicz at No. 3. In third set, Purser won 6-3 to clinch the match for the Penguins.
YSU returns to action on Friday when it visits Cleveland State.
