Box Score

Penn State's top five hitters in the lineup carried the Nittany Lions to a 6-1 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team on Tuesday evening at Medlar Field.

The top five Penn State batters combined for all seven of the Nittany Lions' hits as well as all six of their runs. No. 3 and 4 hitters Jim Haley and Greg Guers combined to go 5-for-7 with four RBIs and four runs scored.

Billy Salem went 2-for-4 with an RBI single, and Andrew Kendrick and Kyle Benyo also singled for the Penguins.

Penn State scored four runs in the third inning to go up 4-0. Conlin Hughes, Penn State's leadoff batter, started the inning with a single, and Nick Riotto was hit by a pitch. Haley doubled both of them in to put the Nittany Lions up a pair, and he scored two batters later on Tyler Kendall's single. The fourth run came in on a double play.

Youngstown State's run came in the top of the fifth. Lorenzo Arcuri drew a two-out walk, stole second and came home on Billy Salem's RBI single to left.

Penn State got the run back immediately in the bottom half as Guers led off with a homer, and the lead increased to 6-1 in the seventh when Geurs tripled in Haley.

YSU starter Collin Floyd pitched into the third inning and was charged with all four runs that scored in the inning. He allowed four hits, walked two and struck out six. Jesse Slinger allowed one run in three innings of relief, and Joel Hake and Kevin Yarabinec both had scoreless innings.

Penn State's Eli Nabholz allowed two hits and walked four in five innings to earn his first win of the season, and Dakota Forsyth pitched the final four innings to earn his first save.

Youngstown State will host a three-game Horizon League series against UIC this weekend. The Penguins and Flames will play at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
