Boardman - Youngstown State's Annina Brendel and Nehel Sahni scored the final five points of their third-set tiebreaker to earn singles wins against Ball State on Sunday morning at the Boardman Tennis Center. The Cardinals won the match 5-2.
Brendel won the first set 6-2 before BSU's Carmen Blanco battled back for 7-6 win in the second set. Blanco took a 9-6 lead and had three chances to win the match. But Brendel scored the final five points of the set to win 11-9 and take the match at No. 2.
Sahni dropped her first set 6-4 to Julia Sbircea before winning the second set 6-3. Sahni trailed 8-5 in third-set tiebreaker before reeling off the final five points of the set to earn a 10-8 win at No. 5.
At No. 6, Ana Stroe also forced a third-set tiebreaker but lost 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 to Isabelle Dohanics. The Cardinals (4-3) won the other singles matches in straight sets and won both completed doubles matches.
The Penguins (2-8) return to action on Friday when they visit Buffalo. First serve against the Bulls is set for 1 p.m.
