Olean, N.Y. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened the dual portion of its season with a strong 6-1 win at St. Bonaventure on Sunday. YSU won the doubles point and took five of six singles matches.
Hugo Morth, Matthew Kritzinger, Bassem El Mekawi, Youssef Sherif and Agustin Reyes all picked up singles wins for the Penguins (1-0). YSU won all three doubles matches against the Bonnies (0-1).
Morth came from behind at No. 1 to defeat Eduardo Irizarry. Morth dropped the opening set 6-7 (5), before rallying to take the next two 7-5, 6-3. At No. 2, Kritzinger also rallied after dropping the first set. SBU's Victor Blanco won the opener 6-2 before Kritzinger won the next two 6-4, 6-3.
At No. 3, Mekawi cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hector Martinez, at No. 5, Sherif picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over McGuirt and Reyes, who joined the team this month, won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 in his debut against Vasquez.
In doubles, Morth and Sherif won 6-3 at No. 1, Kritzinger and Reyes won 6-1 at No. 2 and Mekawi and Gabriel Tolesani earned a 6-2 victory at No. 3.
The Penguins play their first home match of the year on Saturday against Dayton. First serve at the Boardman Tennis Center is set for 5 p.m.
