West Lafayette, Ind. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team fought back against UIC during the singles portion of their Horizon League quarterfinal match, but the Penguins came up just short losing 4-3 to the Flames at the Purdue Schwartz Tennis Center.
The Flames quickly earned the doubles point with 6-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 before the hot-contested singles action started. Five of the six singles matches went five sets.
UIC went up 2-0 in the match as Carl Hedstrom beat Bassem El Mekawi 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 in the only match that didn't go three sets.
Senior Silviu Mistreanu picked up the first point of the match for YSU with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mitch Granger at No. 4.
Like Mistreanu, Kabli dropped his first set 6-3 to Maurizio Feoli before regrouping to win the next two and tie the match. Kabli won the second 6-4 and the third 6-1.
UIC went ahead 3-2 when Issac Lloveras beat Remi Chancerel 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 1.
Hugo Morth caught momentum at the end of him match against Chris Cole. Cole won the first set 7-5 before Morth won the second set 7-6, including 7-1 in the tiebreaker. He closed out the match with a 6-0 win in the third.
The match came down to the six spot on court 12. Victor Pereira won the first set 6-2 against Max Cederkall. However, Cederkall won 7-6 in the second and took the third 6-4. However the match ended in a bit of controversy. Down 5-3, Pereira closed within 5-4 after holding serve. After celebrating a winner by hitting a ball to another court and was assessed a point penalty allowing Cederkall to win without having to serve.
