The Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Valparaiso on Sunday at the YSU Tennis Courts. Silviu Mistreanu picked up a win in his final home match for the Penguins.
Mistreanu conclude a strong weekend with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Garrett Gardner at No. 3. Mistreanu and Gardner have been close friends the past four years as Gardner is a graduate of nearby Poland High School. Mistreanu had practiced and coached Gardner as a junior player.
The Crusaders (20-6 and 4-2) won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. The Penguins ended the regular season with a 8-12 mark and 4-2 league record as well.
In singles, YSU dropped two decisions in three sets. At No. 4, Dawoud Kabli dropped a 6-7 (9-7), 6-4, 6-2 contest to Charlie Emhardt. At No. 5, Victor Pereira rebounded after dropping his first set 6-0 to Kyle Dunn to win the second 6-3. Dunn earned a 10-8 win in the third set.
The Penguins will begin play on Friday at the Horizon League Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. YSU's opponent will be determined on Monday. The match will begin at 11 a.m.
