Riverside, Calif. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened up a three-match trip in California with a 5-2 neutral site win over SIU-Edwardsville on Tuesday morning.
The Penguins (3-7) won the doubles point winning two of three matches and picked up four singles wins against the Cougars (5-5).
Remi Chancerel, Hugo Morth, Silviu Mistreanu and Youssef Sherif picked up wins in singles play.
At No. 1, Chancerel defeated Nicholas Vincent in straight sets at 7-6, 6-1. At No. 2, Morth came through with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Marten Jonsson. At No. 4, Mistreanu picked up his first win of the spring with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 come-from-behind win over Nico Kuehn. At No. 6, Sherif beat Patrick Gaffigan 7-6, 6-3.
In doubles play, Dawoud Kabli and Victor Pereira beat Jonsson and Kuehn by an 8-6 score. At No. 3, Morth and Bassem El Mekawi knocked off Matthew Hutchinson and Gaffigan 8-5.
YSU returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when they take on Gonzaga at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif.
