Boardman - The Youngstown State men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Saint Francis on Friday night at the Boardman Tennis Center.
The Penguins (1-3) won the doubles point and took five singles matches against the Red Flash (2-3).
In doubles play, Remi Chancerel and Hugo Morth cruised to a 6-1 win and the Guins earned the point when Dawould Kabli and Victor Pereira earned a 7-5 decision at No. 2.
In singles play, YSU won each match in straight sets from the No. 2 to No. 6 spot. At No. 2, Morth won 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3, El Mekawi picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win, at No. 4, Kabli cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory, at No. 5, Yassef Sherif won 6-1, 6-3 and at No. 6 Pereira won the match of the day 6-3, 7-6. Pereira trailed 5-0 in the second set before storming back to win the set and the match.
At No. 1, Chancerel dropped a tough 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 decision to Washi Gervais.
YSU returns to the court on Saturday when it plays host to St. Bonaventure. The match is set for 5 p.m. at the Boardman Tennis Center.
