Sophomore Arnaldo Morales broke a nearly 16-year old school record in the high jump on Friday night as the Penguins played host to the YSU College Invitational on at the WATTS.
On his first attempt at 2.09 meters, Morales cleared the bar to eclipse the previous school mark of 2.08 meters set by Anwaa Martin on Feb. 20, 1999. Morales was the lone jumper to clear 2.06 meters on Friday evening and then quickly broke the school record on his first try. He have the bar raised to 2.13 meters, but could not clear the height.
Winners at the meet were Austin McLean (5,000 meters), Jennifer Neider (shot put), Morale (high jump), Nina Grambling (60-meter dash),
In the men's 5,000-meter run, McLean was first with a time of 14:39.85 while Rupe was close behind at 14:39.96. Freshman Ryan Sullivan had a strong effort finishing fourth with a time of 14:55.81.
In the 60m dash, Grambling narrowly took first with a time of 7.583 seconds nipping Pittsburgh's Alyssa Wise who finished with a time of 7.584 seconds. For the men, freshman Carl Zallow was second with a time of 6.98 seconds in the 60m dash and later he came in third in the 200m with a time of 22.06 seconds.
In the women's shot put, Neider was first with a toss of 13.35 meters while in the men's weight throw, Conner Neu was second with a toss of 19.57 meters behind Pittsburgh's Andew Wells. Wells won with a WATTS-record throw of 20.41 meters.
In his YSU debut, Mike Navratli was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.46.
YSU's men's throwers placed second and third in the shot put. Leading the way was Ryan Booth who placed second with a toss of 15.94 meters. Finishing in third place was Jacob Chiclowe who came in third place with a throw of 15.92 meters.
A strong group of Penguins finished third during the event.
In the women's high jump, Chenera Lacey Lacey was third clearing a height of 1.62 meters. In the men's high jump, Jakovina was third clearing the bar at 1.94 meters.
In the women's 60m hurdles, freshman Amber Eles was third with a time of 8.96 seconds. For the men in the 60m hurdles, newcomer Sam Shaviss was third with a time of 8.49 seconds.
In the women's 5,000-meter run, McKinsie Klim was third at 18:07.44 while in the 400m, Jen Shiley posted a third-place time of 57.49 seconds.
In the women's triple jump, Savannah Osborne was third with a distance of 11.10 meters. She was fourth with a leap of 5.31 meters in the long jump.
The Penguins are in action next at the SPIRE Invitational which is Jan. 30-31 in Geneva, Ohio.
