River Forest, Ill. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team finished up strong at its first event of the season at the River Forest Invitational hosted by UIC at both the River Forest Tennis Club and the Oak Park Tennis Center.
The event marked the collegiate debuts for Remi Chancerel, Bassem El Mekawi and Alberto Masso while the three returning players from the 2014 squad - Silviu Mistreanu, Dawoud Kabli and Sharvil Nawghare - all played in the season-opening tournament.
At Flight A Singles, Chancerel dropped a tough three-set decision in his opening match before cruising to impressive straight set wins in his final three singles matches. Also at Flight A Singles, El Makawi picked up the first win of his YSU career.
In doubles play, Chancerel teamed up with Mistreanu to win their final two matches after losing in their opener.
At Flight C Singles, Nawghare also rebounded strong after dropping his first match to win his next two contests. Masso earned his first career victory as a Penguin at Flight C.
The Penguins continue fall play this weekend at the IU Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
