Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team picked up a 4-3 upset victory over third-seed Wright State late Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championships at the Michigan Tennis Center.
With the match tied at three, senior Rodrigo Campos picked up the winning point with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 come-from-behind win over Marc Sodini at No. 6 to lift the Guins to the upset victory.
YSU jumped out to an early lead capturing the singles point by winning both completed matches. YSU won at No. 1 as Sebastian Hagn and Dawoud Kabli beat Hayden Joblin and Ricardo Pineda by an 8-5 score. At No. 3, Zeeshan Ismail and Siliviu Mistreanu beat Sodini and Myles Harris 8-2.
In singles play, Ismail defeated Pineda by a 7-5, 6-1 score for the YSU win while Silviu Mistreanu earned a 7-5, 6-1 win as well over Lauri Makikallli at the No. 1 spot. It was Misteanu's first No. 1 appearance since March 10.
That set the stage for Campos's come-from-behind win. After droppng the first set, the senior rallied to win the last two and earn the Penguins the victory.
WSU earned singles wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5, but it wasn't enough.
YSU advances to the semifinals of the Horizon League Championships for the first time in school history when it takes on Cleveland State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
