Men's Tennis

Penguins Pick Up First HL Win Beating Detroit, 4-3

Southfield, Mich. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 win over Detroit on Sunday evening at the Franklin Athletic Club.

The Penguins won the doubles point and split the six singles matches to win the dual. With the victory, YSU improves to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League while Detroit falls to 3-11 and 0-2.

In doubles play, the point came down to the result at No. 2. YSU won at No. 1 as Dawoud Kabli and Sebastian Hagn earned an 8-2 win, but the Titans earned the decision at No. 3. At No. 2, Rodrigo Campos and Silviu Mistreanu pulled out an 8-7 (5) win over Jay Joshi and Ismail Kadyrov.

In singles, Silviu Mistreanu returned to the lineup and won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 over Joshi. At No. 6, Rodrigo Campos defeated Chance Conley in a three-set match. Campos dropped the first set 6-4 before rebounding to win the last two 6-2, 6-3. At No. 5, Zeeshan Ismail picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win.

At No. 1, Sebastian Hagn dropped a tough 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 decision to Bobby Cawood. At No. 3, Kabli fell 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 to Patryk Koscielski and at No. 4, Max Schmerin dropped a tough three-set match against Rafael Orantes. Schmerin won the first set 7-6 before dropping the final two at 6-3 and 10-6.

The Penguins returned to action next Sunday when they visit St. Bonaventure.
