Boardman - The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened strong by winning the doubles point, but dropped four of seven singles matches to lose a 4-3 dual to IPFW on Friday night at the Boardman Tennis Center.
The Penguins (1-6) came out strong winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to seize the point.
At No. 1, Sebastian Hagn and Dawoud Kabli beat Daniel Kang and Andres Cobos 8-2 while at No. 3, Max Schmerin and Silviu Mistreanu picked up an 8-2 win over Connor Andrews and Karl Wangensten-Oye at 8-2 as well. YSU also led at No. 2 doubles before the match was stopped after clinching the point.
In singles play, YSU never quite got on track. Mistreanu suffered a shoulder injury and had to withdrawal early in his opening set at No. 1 against Kang.
The Mastadons picked up another win at No. 6 as Wangensten-Oye beat Sharvil Nawghere 6-0, 6-0. And took a 3-1 lead when Martin Maudi beat Zeeshan Ismail 6-2, 6-1.
For the Guins, Rodrigo Campos earned a 7-5, 6-3 win over Andrews at No. 5, but a Gerard Guell 7-5, 6-0 win over Schmerin sealed the victory for the Mastadons (7-4).
In the final match of the dual, Hagn battled back after dropping the first set 6-4, to win the second 6-3 and take a third-set tie-breaker 10-2.
YSU concludes the weekend with a home match against Carnegie Mellon on Sunday morning at the Boardman Tennis Center. The dual is scheduled to start at 8:15 a.m.
