Chagrin Falls, Ohio - The Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Cleveland State in the Horizon League opener for both teams on Sunday afternoon at the Chagrin Valley Athletic Club.
The Penguins (1-5 overall and 0-1 in the Horizon League) split the first two completed doubles matches with the Vikings (3-4 and 1-0).
At No. 1, Dawoud Kabli and Sebastian Hagn teamed up for an 8-6 win over Joe VanMeter and Ali Shabib after Rodrigo Campos and Victor Thoerin dropped their match at No. 2. The point went to Cleveland State as Max Schmerin and Silviu Mistreanu lost a back-and-forth 8-7 decision at No. 3.
Mistearnu earned the Penguins lone point of the match defeating Jorg van der Vloet 6-1 and 7-5 at No. 1 singles. The Vikings won the other five singles matches in straight sets.
The Penguins return to action on Friday when they play host to IPFW. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the Boardman Tennis Center.
