Chicago -- UIC starter Joey Begel had a no-hitter through six innings, and the Flames gave him all the support he needed early in an 8-1 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team on Sunday at Les Miller Field.

Begel faced the minimum until he walked Phil Lipari and Devin Higgins with two outs in the fifth. The senior right-hander got Craig Goubeaux to line out to end the fifth, and he retired the Penguins in order in the sixth and got the first two outs in the seventh. Kris Moules then ended the shutout and no-hitter with one swing, a solo homer to left.

Begel, though, was handed a 3-0 lead after one inning, and the Flames led 7-0 before Moules' homer. Ryan Boss hit a three-run double with two outs in the first, and Tyler Detmer brought in John Coen with a two-out single in the second as UIC led 4-0. The Flames added another two-out run in the fifth and two more runs with two outs in the sixth. UIC also answered Moules' homer with a run in the bottom of the seventh for the final tally.

Begel allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out four in eight innings to improve to 2-1. YSU starter Ryan Krokos was charged with five runs on seven hits in five innings, and the other three runs were charged to Jared Wight.

Padraic Williams, Nick DiNello and Phil Lipari had singles for YSU. Boss plated four runs for UIC, and Detmer was 3-for-5.

Youngstown State is scheduled to play at Ohio on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
