Box Score Niles, Ohio -- Ohio scored five of its eight
runs in the final three innings and made the Youngstown State
baseball team pay for stranding 10 runners in an 8-3 win over the
Penguins on Tuesday at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins, although tying the game at 3-3 in the sixth
inning, left eight runners on base in the fourth through sixth
innings. They also had a runner thrown out at the plate in the
sixth. Ohio was able to come through with clutch hits as each of
its final five runs came with two outs.
Drew Dosch, Jason Shirley and David Leon all had two hits apiece
for the Penguins. Cody Gaertner had three hits, two runs scored and
two RBIs for the Bobcats.
Ohio scored an unearned run in the first off starter Russ
Harless to go up 1-0. Ethan Newton reached on an error to lead off
the game, and he scored one batter later on Tyler Wells' double to
left. Harless retired the next three batters and allowed just a
walk in the second before reaching his pitch count for the day.
The Bobcats then took a 3-0 lead in the fourth when Gaertner hit
a two-run home run to right off of Nick DiBartolomeo.
YSU scored one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth
innings, but the Guins also stranded eight runners in that
three-inning span.
Dosch singled to start the fourth and scored on Dan Hurlimann's
RBI single to make the score 3-1. Padraic Williams then scored on a
sacrifice fly from Marcus Heath in the fifth to cut the margin to
just one. After leading the bases loaded the previous two innings,
the Penguins managed just one run in the sixth despite having the
bases juiced with nobody out. Jeremy Banks singled to bring in Phil
Lipari with the tying run, but David Leon was thrown out at the
plate by Newton in center field. Dosch was retired trying to bunt
for a base hit, and Shirley struck out to end the inning.
Ohio reclaimed the lead with a sacrifice fly in the seventh that
made the score 4-3. Brad Smith walked Wells and intentionally put
Jensen Painter on before handing the ball to Erik Okleson. Jake
Madsen greeted him with a single to load the bases, and Dan Schmidt
brought in Wells with a sacrifice fly to give the Bobcats a lead
they would not relinquish. The Bobcats then scored three two-out
runs on four hits in the eighth to up their lead to 7-3. They added
another two-out run in the ninth for the final tally.
Sean Kennedy earned the win for Ohio, allowing one run on four
hits in 2 1-3 innings of relief. Smith was charged with the loss
for YSU. Four of Ohio's runs and seven of their 11 hits came in two
innings off Pat Shedlock in the final two innings.
