Junior Samantha Hamilton won Saturday's 5k race at the Duquesne Duals in Pittsburgh, Pa. as the women's squad opened the season by cruising past Pitt and Niagara. The men's team defeated Pitt, Niagara and Carnegie-Mellon with Eric Rupe crossing the finish line first for the Guins in the 8k race.
Women's Results
Hamilton, who was YSU's top finisher last season, begins the 2011 campaign by running a strong time of 18:31 to finish first out of 63 runners. Sophomore Anna Pompeo came in at 20:18 (18th place) with fellow sophomore Christina Oles (21st) 10 seconds behind her. Junior Nelly Yegon (24th) and freshman Katie Heney (25th) rounded out the top five, completing the course in 20:43 and 20:46, respectively.
The women's team, consisting of only freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, beat Pitt by a score of 25-30 and beat Niagara by a score of 19-41. They fell just short of beating Carnegie-Mellon by a score of 28-27.
Men's Results
The men's squad, also full of new faces, had a strong start to the 2011 season. Sophomore Eric Rupe finished in 12th place out of 72 runners in a time of 27:25. Freshmen Nick Gilha (20th) and Austin Mclean (23rd) made the top 25 by running the course in 28:03 and 28:11, respectively. Brandon Pasvanis, who transferred from Mount Union, finished in 29:11 while Aron Korir rounded out YSU's top five in a time of 30:00 even.
YSU's men beat Carnegie-Mellon by 29-30, Pitt by 23-32 and Niagara by 23-32. The team was just shy of overcoming St. Vincent, 30-28.
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Thursday, September 8 at the Akron Quad in Akron, Oh.
