YSU's Bats Stay Hot With 23 Hits, 22 Runs in Win Over Duquesne

Niles, Ohio -- The Youngstown State baseball team stayed on a tear offensively, pounding out at least 20 hits for the third time in four games in a 22-8 win over Duquesne on Wednesday at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins hit five home runs - two by Joe Iacobucci - and got five hits from freshman Neil Schroth in the win. The 23 hits recorded are tied for the second-most in a game in school history.
Armani Johnson also homered and drove in a career-high five runs, and Derek Carr and Tom Clayton each hit their first home runs of the campaign. Jeremy Banks doubled twice and tripled in three at bats.
The Penguins used 11 different pitchers in the contest as they used it as a day to give their bullpen some work. Ryan Messmer was credited with the win as he threw a scoreless second inning.
Duquesne took a 1-0 lead in the first off YSU starter Bill Turosky when Mark Tracy drove in Andrew Heck on a sacrifice fly. Dukes starter Michael Pelekanos worked around two hits in the first to hold the lead, but the Penguins started a scoring run on him with one out in the second and didn't stop until they had 16 runs by the fifth.
Armani Johnson hit a two-run home run to straightaway center in the second, C.J. Morris had an RBI single, and Schroth had his first of three doubles. Schroth, making his second career start, became the ninth player in Youngstown State history to have at least five hits in a game and the eighth to have three doubles.
Duquesne cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the third, but the Penguins answered with three two-out runs in their half to go ahead 7-3. Johnson singled in Clayton, and Carr hit a two-run home run to right center for his first career round-tripper.
The Dukes cut the lead to one again with three runs in the top of the fourth, but the Penguins matched that with another three-run inning in their half. Schroth hit a one-out double, and Iacobucci followed with his first home run of the contest on a laser to the bullpen. The third run came when Banks walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
Duquesne made one more attempt to climb back with a run in the fifth to cut the margin to 10-7, but YSU blew the game open with six two-out runs in the bottom half. Schroth and Iacobucci started things with RBI singles, Banks followed with a two-run triple and Clayton put an exclamation put on the frame with a two-run homer to right.
Neither team scored in the sixth, the only inning where nobody scored, and YSU added two runs in the seventh. Iacobucci started the frame with a homer, and Johnson brought in Banks on a sacrifice fly. YSU added four runs in the eighth, and Duquesne had a run in the ninth for the final margin.
Heck went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBIs to lead Duquesne.
The Penguins have now hit 34 home runs in the first 25 games this season, which is already more than the 32 they hit last season in 51 games. The school record for home runs in a season is 43.
YSU will open up a three-game home stand against Valparaiso on Friday at 3 p.m.
