The Youngstown State football team held their final scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning at Stambaugh Stadium.
For the second straight Saturday, the offense started out hot before the defense stepped up their physicality during the more than two-hour workout.
The offense opened the scrimmage with a 13-play, 81-yard drive as the No. 1 offense went against the No. 1 defense. QB Beau Brungard completed four of five passes on the drive for 33 yards. Antuan Gardner capped off the march with a three-yard scoring touchdown.
The second-team unit went for a quick strike score. On the first play for the unit, Malachi "Bubba" Lewis connected on a 57-yard toss to Payton Bjork after the drive started with an incompletion. On the next play, Lewis found Conor Smith for a 17-yard scoring toss.
On the next four possessions, the defense had the upper hand, highlighted by an Ethan Coe fumble recovery on a fourth-down bad snap.
The offense was able to get on the board again moving 42 yards in eight plays. After Dev Holman broke up a pair of passes, Brungard found an open Williams in the back of the end zone for a five-yard touchdown. On the drive, 44 of the 45 yards came through the air.
Brungard and Williams connected later in the scrimmage for another score. This time, the duo scored on a 10-yard toss capping off a 75-yard, nine-play drive.
For the scrimmage, Brungard was 18-of-24 for 199 yards and two scores and rushed for 18 yards on seven carries. Lewis finished with 87 yards on four completions.
The Penguins return to practice on Monday morning in preparation for the 2026 season opener against Mercyhurst on August 27 at Stambaugh Stadium.
