Sam Leads Penguins at Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational

Indianapolis – Ryan Sam was the top individual finisher for the Youngstown State men's golf team after the three-round, two-day Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational at Highland Golf & Country Club which concluded on Tuesday.

Sam finished with a three-round total of 210, tying three other golfers for 11th place. Michael Porter carded a 216 to finish 32nd while Rocco Turner had a 224, Josh Weiner finished with a 225 and Jordan Kish had a 226. As an individual, Jake Ryan finished with a three-round total of 231.

The Penguins finished with a three-round team total of 872 (292-286-294) and tied with Green Bay for 10th place. Butler won the event with an impressive 826 (16-under par) while SIU Edwardsville was second at 834 (six-under par).

All three of Sam's rounds were 71-or-lower at the event. He finished even par for the tournament after a first round 71, a second round 68 and a final day 71. He had 11 birdies in the tournament with six coming during his two-under par second round. On Tuesday, he had three birdies and 11 pars in the final session.

Porter was consistent with rounds of 71, 73 and 72 for his score of 216. Porter had seven birdies throughout the tournament with three coming in his first and third rounds.

Turner and Weiner were also consistent during their three rounds. Turner had four birdies while Weiner had two birdies and an eagle-2 at the par-4 No. 17 on Tuesday. Kish had a one-over par 71 for his second round which featured 15 pars and a birdie. He pared every hole on the back nine during his second round.

As an individual, Ryan had four birdies for an opening round two-over par 72.

Butler had the top two individual finishers at its annual spring event. Earning medalist honors at nine-under par was Leo Zurovac while placing second at seven-under par was Derek Tabor.

The Penguins are next in action on April 6-7 at The Jewell hosted by Northern Kentucky at Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, Ohio.
