Sam and Penguins in Fifth After Sunday’s Second Round at 2026 HL Championship

Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. -- The Youngstown State men's golf team remains in fifth place after Sunday's second round of the 2026 Horizon League Men's Golf Championship at Mission Resort + Club.

After two rounds on Mission Resort + Club's El Campeon Course, the Penguins are nine shots back of co-leaders Oakland and Purdue Fort Wayne in the team standings. The Golden Grizzlies carded a 295 (+7) on Sunday to move up three spots and have a two-day total of 584 while Youngstown State recorded a second-round 299 (+11) and has a total of 593.

The Mastodons finished the second session with a 299 to sit in a tie atop the team leaderboard with Oakland heading into Monday's third and final round. Top-seeded Wright State is just one shot off the pace in third with a two-day total of 585 following a second-round 298 on Sunday. Green Bay is positioned fourth with a total of 588 after posting a 302 on Sunday while Detroit Mercy is three strokes behind YSU in sixth place after a second-round 301.

Ryan Sam is tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard with a two-round total of 145 following a four-over-par 76 on Sunday. The senior's second round featured 13 pars and a birdie on the par-three No. 2. Starting his round on No. 10, like the rest of the Penguins, Sam made par or better on 12 of his first 13 holes to remain in the hunt ahead of Monday's final round.

Sam is four shots back of individual leaders Rakshit Dahiya of Oakland and Shane Ochs of Wright State, who each own a two-round total of 141. Sam is in a group of 10 golfers who are within five strokes of the individual leaders following two rounds of action.

Nolan Shilling is tied for 14th individually with a two-day total of 148 after firing a one-over-par round of 73 on Sunday. The redshirt sophomore's second session included 10 pars and a string of three straight birdies which came at No. 1 through No. 3. Shilling turned in a one-under-par 34 on the front nine for a strong close to his second round of play.

Jake Ryan is tied for 20th with a two-round total of 149 following a second-round 74 in Sunday's second round. The junior's second round featured 12 pars a pair of birdies coming at No. 1 and No. 14. Ryan started his round by carding seven pars and a birdie during an even-par 37 on the back nine.

Michael Porter is in a tie for 27th on the individual leaderboard with a 151 after recording a round of 76 on Sunday. The redshirt junior tallied nine pars, two birdies and an eagle on the par-five No. 1 during his second round. Porter shot an even-par 35 on the front nine.

Jordan Kish concluded his second round of action with a 79 on Sunday and holds a two-day total of 157. The sophomore posted 12 pars during the second round in the Sunshine state.

Youngstown State is scheduled to start its third and final round of the 2026 Horizon League Men's Golf Championship on Monday off No. 1 with tee times beginning at noon. Live scoring will be available via Scoreboard by Clippd.
