Farmville, Va. -- Chyran Humphries and Alex Jang each hit home runs for the Penguins, but Longwood scored the final four runs of the game to overcome a two-run deficit and defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 6-4 in the series finale on Sunday at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
The Lancers jumped ahead 2-0 before the Penguins scored the next four runs of the contest to take a 4-2 lead. Longwood scored once in fourth and twice in the sixth to regain the advantage while adding a single tally in the seventh for the final margin.
Longwood won its third straight game to improve to 10-2 while Youngstown State falls to 1-10.
Jang went 3-for-4 with a double and his first career home run while Humphries hit his first homer as a Penguin. Luke Rossi recorded an RBI double while Brayden Kuriger and Kendal Spencer added two hits apiece.
YSU starter Brandon Mikos was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits with four strikeouts over 5.1 innings on the mound. Luke Zmolik was responsible for one unearned run while pitching 1.1 innings as one of four relievers for appear for the Penguins.
The Lancers grabbed an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brogan Jones hit a one-out single and Jon Howard followed with a two-run home run to give Longwood a 2-0 edge.
The Penguins cut their deficit in half with a single run in the top of the third when Misael Uriepero drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on Rossi's two-out RBI double to left center field. YSU went in front for the first time with three runs on five hits in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage. Humphries led off the inning with his first home run as a Penguin to even the score. Spencer reached on a bunt single and Jang followed with his first career home run to put the Penguins ahead.
The Lancers cut their deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Ben Pulliam hit a two-out solo home run. Howard's solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth evened the score at 4-4, and Lucas Johnson singled and scored on Max Lawson's two-out RBI single later in the inning to give Longwood a 5-4 lead.
The Lancers added their final run in the bottom of the seventh as Jones drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored when Pulliam reached on an error.
Howard finished 2-for-5 at the plate with two home runs and three RBIs to lead Longwood's offensive effort.
Longwood starter Brayden Gray worked a scoreless first inning before Drew Siegner came in to allow four runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. Jackson Garland was awarded the win after striking out six batters over 3.2 scoreless innings of relief while JR Fordham recorded the final out of the game to earn the save.
The Penguins will continue their early season road stretch on Tuesday at Pitt in their first midweek contest of the 2026 season. First pitch at Charles L. Cost Field in Pittsburgh is scheduled for 3 p.m.
