Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Youngstown State men's basketball team shot 66 percent from the field, made 16 3-pointers and five players scored in double figures to coast to a 90-61 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday evening at Allen County Memorial Coliseum.
Youngstown State, who has won three of the last four games, improves to 12-12 overall and 5-8 in the Horizon League while the Mastodons fall to 14-10 overall and 8-5 in the league.
The Penguins' 29-point margin of victory was the second-highest in a Horizon League road game in school history, and it's the largest margin since the Penguins defeated Northern Kentucky at home, 82-52, on Jan. 28, 2024.
Youngstown State's field-goal percentage (35-for-53) is the third-highest single-game total in school history and the highest against a Horizon League opponent.
Senior Bryson Dawkins led the Penguins with 18 points while Rich Rolf poured in 15 and made a career-best five 3-pointers. Junior Tae Blackshear posted 14 points with a career-best four 3s while Cris Carroll scored 12 and Cam Polak added 10 points.
The 16 made 3-pointers mark the 16th time this season the Penguins have made at least 10 3s in a game, and they're tied for the fourth most made 3s in a game in school history. The Penguins connected on 57.1 percent (16-for-28) of their shots beyond the arc.
The game was deadlocked at 16-16 less than eight minutes into the game, but the Penguins went on a 16-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 32-18 lead at the 8:18 mark of the first half. Blackshear connected on a pair of 3s, Dawkins added a layup and a three-point play and Rolf buried a step-back 3-pointer to cap the Penguins spurt.
Purdue Fort Wayne scored seven straight to bring the deficit down to single digits, 32-25, but the Penguins outscored the Mastodons 13-4 over the last 6:12 of the half to take a 45-29 lead into the lockerroom at the intermission.
Youngstown State shot 66.7 percent from the floor, going 18-for-27 from the field, including 7-for-12 from 3-point range.
Dawkins went 6-for-9 from the floor and led the Penguins with 13 points while Rolf had 12 points with four 3s.
Youngstown State opened the second half with consecutive 3-pointers from Carroll and Polak for a 21-point advantage, and Rolf added another 3-pointer to push the Penguins lead back to 20 points, 54-34, with 16:23 remaining.
The Mastodons never got closer than 18 points the rest of the way and the Penguins led by as many as 31 points, 90-59, with just over a minute to go.
Youngstown State returns home to host Robert Morris, Saturday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
