Detroit, Mich. – The Youngstown State women's soccer team won for the third straight time with an impressive 3-0 shutout over Detroit Mercy on Sunday afternoon at Titan Field.
The Penguins, who are 4-7-3 overall, improve to 4-0-1 in Horizon League play for the first time in program history. The Titans fall to 3-7-2 overall and 1-3-1 in league action.
The victory also marks the first time Youngstown State has won three conference road games, and the first time the Penguins defeated the Titans in Detroit.
Junior goalkeeper Kendall Sears recorded her third straight shutout and tallied five saves, while senior Camille Bultel scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Penguins offense.
Sophomore Ghita Haouzi and senior Autumn Fairfax each score goals while sophomore Ava Paris, senior Emma Berdiner, junior Leah Weiland and sophomore Gwen Schulman were all credited with assists.
The teams battled through a scoreless tie for more than 41 minutes before the Penguins broke the stalemate. After the Titans kicked the ball out on the right side, freshman Jenna Tufo's quick throw in found senior Emma Berdiner just outside the 18. Berdiner centered to Bultel just inside the penalty box and her right-footer while falling down hit the top right of the corner at the 41:38 mark.
The Penguins peppered Detroit Mercy goalkeeper Eva Hill with nine shots in the first half led by Kamryn Rosa's three. Bultel and Sara Felder each had two shots in the first 45 minutes.
Haouzi extended the Penguins lead to 2-0 at the 49:26 mark. Haouzi played the ball to Leah Weiland in the middle and Weiland slipped a pass Schulman on the left side. A cross by Schulman connected with Haouzi whose header found the top left of the goal.
Nine minutes later, Fairfax posted her second goal of the season with a header into the lower left off a free kick from Bultel in the 60th minute.
The Penguins return home host Wright State on Senior Night, Saturday, Oct. 10. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field.
