Shoults Claims Medalist Honors as Penguins Win Roseann Schwartz Invitational in Record-Breaking Fashion

Boardman, Ohio -- Senior Maddi Shoults claimed medalist honors as the Youngstown State women's golf team won the 11th annual Roseann Schwartz Invitational in record-breaking fashion on Monday at Mill Creek Golf Course.

The Penguins set new school records for lowest 36-hole performance and lowest team round in relation to par while winning their third straight fall tournament. After seizing a commanding 21-shot advantage with a team score of 290 in the opening round on Sunday, YSU pulled away with a school-record 284 (-4) on Monday to win the event by 36 strokes over runner-up Purdue Fort Wayne.

Youngstown State's 284 ranks as the lowest round in relation to par in program history, eclipsing the previous mark of 285 (-3) at the Indiana State University Invitational in 2018-19. The Penguins finished the tournament at two under par with a two-round team total of 574 to set a new school record for lowest 36-hole tournament. YSU surpassed the previous mark of 577, which was also set at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational in 2018-19.

Shoults finished atop the individual leaderboard with a two-round score of 141 (69-72), which is tied for the fourth-lowest individual 36-hole score in program history. The senior grabbed a one-shot lead following a season-low, three-under-par 69 in the first round on Sunday. The Circleville, Ohio, native carded an even-par 72 on Monday that featured 10 pars and four birdies to become the third different Penguin to claim an individual tournament title this fall.

Sofia Perez Escarcena finished one shot back as the individual runner-up with a two-round total of 142 (70-72). After a two-under-par 70 on Sunday, the sophomore fired an even-par 72 in Monday's final session that included 10 pars and four birdies.

Valentina Peña Anaya placed third individually with a two-round score of 144 (75-69). The sophomore's career-low, three-under-par 69 in the second round featured 13 pars and four birdies as she shot a two-under-par 34 on the back nine. Peña Anaya made par or better on each of her final 17 holes after starting with a bogey on No. 17.

Neeranuch Prajunpanich finished fourth with a two-round 147 (76-71) to give the Penguins the top four spots on the individual leaderboard. The sophomore's one-under-par 71 in Monday's second round included 11 pars and four birdies as she turned in a two-under-par 34 on the front nine.

Playing as an individual, Maureen Burns finished tied for 20th with a two-round total of 158 (81-77). The redshirt freshman's career-low 77 on Monday featured 10 pars and a pair of birdies as she shot an even-par 36 on the front nine. Bella Saur placed 27th with a two-round score of 162 (78-84).

Competing as individuals, Adena Rugola recorded a two-round total of 166 (86-80) while Matilyn Zines finished the event with a two-round 167 (84-83).

Purdue Fort Wayne finished as the runner-up at 34 over par with a two-round team total of 610 while Saint Francis placed third with a 626. Mercyhurst finished fourth with a 633 while Detroit Mercy rounded out the top five with a 642.
