Boardman, Ohio -- Senior Maddi Shoults fired a season-low, three-under-par 69 to help the Youngstown State women's golf team seize a commanding 21-shot lead following Sunday's opening round of the 11th annual Roseann Schwartz Invitational at Mill Creek Golf Course.
The Penguins concluded the tournament's first round with a team score of 290 (+2) to carry a 21-stroke advantage over second-place Purdue Fort Wayne into the second and final round on Monday.
Shoults carded a season-low, three-under-par round of 69 on Sunday that featured 11 pars and five birdies. The senior turned in a three-under-par 33 on the back nine with six pars and three birdies. Shoults holds a one-shot advantage on the individual leaderboard ahead of Monday's final round.
Sofia Perez Escarcena sits one stoke behind her teammate in second place after a two-under-par 70 on Sunday that included 15 pars, a birdie on the par-five No. 18 and an eagle on the par-five No. 15. The sophomore recorded seven pars, a birdie and an eagle for a three-under-par 33 on the back nine.
Valentina Peña Anaya is tied for sixth individually after a first-round 75 on Sunday that featured 14 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 15. Neeranuch Prajunpanich is tied for eighth after posting a first-round 76 that included five birdies. After a rocky front nine, the sophomore settled in to shoot an even-par 36 with four birdies on the back nine.
Bella Saur is tied for 13th on the individual leaderboard after an opening-round 78 on Sunday that featured 11 pars and a pair of birdies. Playing as an individual, Maureen Burns carded a career-low round of 81 that included three birdies in her second collegiate event.
Also competing as individuals, Matilyn Zines finished Sunday's first round with an 84, and Adena Rugola recorded an 86.
Monday's second and final round from Mill Creek's North Course is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat through links on YSUsports.com.
