Queens, N.Y. – Youngstown State made a surge in the second half but dropped a 2-1 decision to St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
The Penguins fall to 1-5 on the year while the Red Storm improve to 2-0.
Youngstown State peppered the St. John's defense and outshot the Red Storm, 11-2, in the second half and 16-10 overall.
Junior Camille Bultel posted her third goal of the year scoring on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute to cut the Red Storm advantage in half.
YSU posted three corner kicks and three more shots on goal in the second frame, but SJU goalkeeper Kayla Bower denied each scoring chance.
The Red Storm scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the contest to take a 2-0 advantage.
In the first half, Youngstown State mustered just five shots, including three on goal.
Bultel led the Guins with four total shots, including three on target, and freshman Kamryn Rosa added three shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maya Naimoli tallied five saves, including four in the first half.
Youngstown State faces Michigan next Sunday, Sept. 7. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Ann Arbor, Mich.
