Fort Wayne, Ind. -- Purdue Fort Wayne scored the final 10 runs of the game on its way to a 14-4 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Mastodon Field.
The Mastodons used a four-run second inning to grab an early lead before the Penguins posted four runs of their own in the top of the third to tie the contest. Purdue Fort Wayne erupted for six runs in the home half of the third to regain the lead before scoring twice in the fourth and twice in the fifth to secure the win in seven innings and even the three-game Horizon League series.
Brayden Kuriger went 2-for-4 with a two-run double while Kyle Fossum, Jay Wrona and Jack Johnson added two hits apiece for the Penguins offensively.
YSU starter JJ Tylicki was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on five hits over two innings. Sloan Ulrich was responsible for four runs in one inning of relief while Colin Casteel and Nolan Kubilus each permitted a pair of runs.
Purdue Fort Wayne jumped in front with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Jackson Micheels hit a leadoff single and Kevin Hall followed with a two-run home run to right field. Owen Willard singled and Nick Hockemeyer walked before both runners advanced 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Jenkins. Grant Sawa plated both baserunners with a two-run single up the middle to give the 'Dons a 4-0 advantage.
The Penguins responded immediately with four runs in the top of the third inning to even the score. Johnson hit a leadoff single and Fossum and Tommy Rover each walked to load the bases. Kuriger plated Johnson and Fossum with a two-run double to left field before Rover scored from third on an RBI groundout by Garrett Cutting. Kuriger then raced home on Cole Smith's two-out RBI single to tie the contest at 4-4.
The Mastodons regained the upper hand with six runs in the home half of the third inning. Tylicki issued back-to-back walks to Camden Karczewski and Micheels before handing the ball to Ulrich out of the bullpen. Hall greeted Ulrich with an RBI single that scored Karczewski while Micheels scored when Jenkins reached on a fielder's choice. Sawa hit a two-out RBI single, Justin Osterhouse was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Karczewski capped the rally with a two-run single to center field.
Purdue Fort Wayne scored twice in the bottom of the fourth as Brooks Sailors and Osterhouse each drew a walk with the bases loaded. The 'Dons added a pair of runs in the fifth inning to produce the final margin. Micheels drew a leadoff walk, Hall doubled and Willard followed with a two-run single to left center field.
PFW starter Dillon Fischer earned the victory after allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out eight batters over six innings of work.
The Penguins and Mastodons will conclude their three-game Horizon League series on Sunday. First pitch at Mastodon Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
