The Youngstown State men's tennis team finished off a strong weekend with a 6-1 victory over Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
With the win, the Penguins improve to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in Horizon League play. NKU falls to 4-8 and 2-2. YSU has already eclipsed last year's total for dual wins while beating the Norse for the first time since April 2023.
The Guins won the doubles point and five singles contests. Of the five singles contests, three were in straight sets.
In doubles play, YSU garnered wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to claim the point. At No. 3, Filip Avdeev and Mihai Haita were dominant in a 6-1 victory. The other two doubles matches were nip-and-tuck before William Rassat and Chester Wickwire battled back for a 6-4 clinching victory.
In singles action, Avdeev, Dasset and Rassat all won their matches in straight sets. Avdeev picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2, Dasset won his contest at No. 3 by scores of 6-3 and 6-3 and Rasset won his contest 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.
At No. 1, Balci won his contest 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 and at No. 6, Viktor Van Craenenbroeck won by a score of 6-4, 6-7, 10-7. The Norse earned a win at No. 4 by a score of 6-4, 7-6.
On the weekend, Balci, Avdeev and Dasset went 2-0 in singles play while Avdeev and Haita were 2-0 at No. 3 doubles as the Guins picked up wins over IU Indy and the Norse.
YSU returns to action on Saturday with a pair of matches in Chicago. The Penguins have a league contest against Chicago State with an evening match at Northwestern.
