The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened Horizon League play with a 5-2 win over IU Indy on Saturday afternoon at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins (9-5 overall and 1-0Â in the Horizon League) won a hard-fought doubles point before winning three singles contests in straight sets. Winning in straight sets were Onder Balci at No. 1, Filip Avdeev at No. 2 and Ethan Dasset at No. 3. With the match at 4-2, Matteo Cerardelli closed out the contest with a three-set super tiebreak winner.
In doubles, the Guins used wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the early lead.
At No. 2, Balci and Dasset earned a 6-2 win before the Jaguars evened the match with a 6-4 win at No. 1. After leading 3-2, Balci and Dasset scored the final three points to win the decision. At No. 3, the contest last nearly an hour, before Avdeev and Haita won by a 7-5 score. With the match tied 5-5, the Guins duo won the final two points to earn the decision.
Balci won in just over an hour at No. 1 singles. He collected his victory by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
At No. 2, Avdeev won 6-3, 6-3 and Dasset clinched the win with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3. The Jaguars won in straight sets at Nos. 4 and 6. In the final match of the contest, Matteo Cerardelli battled back for a 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-4 win. Cerardelli fought off three match points in the second-set tiebreaker.
The Penguins wrap up the weekend with a home match against Northern Kentucky tomorrow. First serve is set for Noon at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
