Kyle Fossum and Garrett Cutting each homered as the Youngstown State baseball team fell 13-2 to UTSA in the series finale on Sunday at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.
The Penguins led 1-0 after Fossum's solo blast in the top of the first before the Roadrunners responded with six runs in the home half of the inning. Cutting's first homer of the season cut the deficit to 6-2 before UTSA posted three runs in the third and four in the fourth to pull away for the seven-inning victory.
Fossum went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double to pace the Penguins offensively.
YSU starter Tyler Heflin suffered the loss after allowing six runs on two hits in one inning on the mound. Braden Gebhardt surrendered seven runs, two of which were earned, on four hits over two innings out of the bullpen. Mikey Rodriques did not allow a hit over two scoreless innings while Colin Casteel tossed a scoreless sixth.
Youngstown State got on the board in the top of the first inning with two-out solo home run to left center from Fossum.
UTSA answered with six runs in the home half of the first to take the lead. Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases before James Taussig was hit by a pitch to force in the first run of the inning. Drew Detlefsen followed with a two-run single, Jordan Ballin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Detlefsen scored when Nathan Hodge grounded into a double play. Broc Parmer added a two-out RBI single to give the Roadrunners a 6-1 advantage.
The Penguins got another single run in the top of the second when Cutting his first home run of the season.
UTSA added three runs in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 9-2. Ballin was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a wild pitch while Hodge singled and scored on an RBI single from Mason Lytle. Caden Miller drew a one-out walk and was able to score from second on a fielding error. The Roadrunners added four runs in the bottom of the fourth for the final margin.
UTSAÂ starter Conor Myles allowed two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts over five innings to collect the victory while Jake Cothran and Connor Kelley each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Youngstown State will return to action on Friday when it opens a three-game weekend series at Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m. The Penguins and Bulldogs will proceed to play on Saturday at 2 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m.
