The Youngstown State baseball team hit three home runs and had seven extra-base hits en route to salvaging the Horizon League series finale with a 10-7 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday at Eastwood Field.
Brady Shannon hit a pair of home runs while Kyle Fossum went 2-for-3 with a home run, two walks and two runs scored. Tommy Rover finished 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored while Brayden Kuriger drove in a team-high three runs.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead with a six-run second inning before the Penguins struck for the next 10 runs of the contest. Milwaukee scored a single run in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
YSU starter Tyler Heflin allowed six unearned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks over four innings in a no-decision. Phil Brennaman scattered two hits and had four strikeouts over 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Harun Pelja was responsible for one run in one inning while Mikey Rodriques recorded the final two outs in the ninth for his first career save.
The Panthers struck for six runs in the top of the second inning to move ahead. An error and two walks loaded the bases before an RBI groundout from John Hadley plated Caden Headlee for the game's first run. Gabe Roessler drove in a run with a bunt single before Tate Schmidt hit a two-out, two-run double to give Milwaukee a 4-0 lead. Tyler Bickers delivered an RBI single before Charlie Marion's RBI double pushed the Panthers' advantage to 6-0.
The Penguins got on the board in the bottom half of the second when Shannon led off the inning with his fourth home run of the season. Jack Johnson drew a one-out walk and scored on an RBI double to left center by Garrett Cutting. After advancing to third on a groundout, Cutting raced home on a wild pitch to cut Milwaukee's lead to 6-3. Fossum followed with a towering solo home run to center field to bring the Penguins within 6-4.
Shannon's second solo blast of the afternoon in the bottom of the third inning cut YSU's deficit to 6-5. The Penguins proceeded to even the score at 6-6 with another single tally in the home half of the fourth. Rover hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kuriger.
Youngstown State plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to take its first lead of the game at 8-6. Johnson doubled off the wall in right center field and scored on an RBI double to the same part of the field by Jay Wrona. Wrona advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a two-out RBI single from Rover.
The Penguins' final two runs of the day came in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single by Kuriger.
Milwaukee starter Mike Sullivan allowed three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings while Zach Dohrmann suffered the loss after surrendering three runs over 1.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Tate Schmidt went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs to pace the Panthers offensively. The Penguins bested the Panthers 12-8 in the hit column.
Youngstown State will continue its season-long seven-game homestand at Eastwood Field on Tuesday with a non-conference contest against Mercyhurst at 5 p.m.
