Detroit, Mich. – Youngstown State made a season-high 16 3-pointers and never trailed in an 87-72 win over Detroit Mercy on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.
Junior Juwan Maxey scored a team-high 21 points and made a career-best six 3-pointers to lead the Penguins (16-10, 10-5 Horizon League) while senior EJ Farmer scored 17 points with four 3s. Junior Cris Carroll poured in 16 points and connected on three 3-pointers while Ty Harper and Nico Galette scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Youngstown State's 16 3s rank tied for the third most in a single game, and its 10 Horizon League wins mark the fourth straight season with at least 10 conference victories.
Leading the Titans (8-18, 4-11 Horizon League) was Orlando Lovejoy with 24 points.
The Penguins made four straight 3-pointers to open the game, and they connected on five of their first six field-goal attempts to jump out to 15-2 lead less than four minutes into the game. Three-pointers by Farmer, Maxey, and two more by Farmer and another basket by Maxey pushed the Penguins to the 13-point advantage at the 16:02 mark.
After the Titans cut the lead to nine, 17-8, the Penguins scored 15 straight points to expand the lead to 30-8 midway through the opening 20 minutes. Farmer and junior Jason Nelson each hit 3s to start the spurt, followed by a basket by Harper and 3-pointers by Siem Uijtendaal and Carroll.
YSU led by as many as 25, 40-15 and took a 43-26 lead into the lockerroom after an 11-3 Titans run.
The Titans showed plenty of resilience in the second half shooting 56.3 percent from the field and trimming the Penguins lead down to 10 three times.
Harper opened the second half with a 3-pointer to give the Penguins a 20-point lead, 46-26. Detroit Mercy responded with a 12-4 run to get within 12 at the 15:13 mark.
Two more 3s from Maxey, another from Farmer and a basket by Galette pushed the lead back to 18, 61-43, with 12:45 to go.
After Detroit Mercy got within 10 for the third time, 71-61, with just under five minutes left, Galette and Gabe Dynes each made two free throws, Harper collected a steal and dunk, and Maxey hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game to balloon the lead to 16, 80-64, with 3:03 remaining.
Carroll's 3-pointer at the 1:04 mark sealed the Penguins victory.
Youngstown State returns home to host Purdue Fort Wayne, Wednesday, Feb. 12. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
