The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened their dual season with a 6-1 win over Carnegie Mellon on Friday night at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins (1-0) won two of three doubles matches and had singles wins by Filip Avdeev, Ethan Dasset, William Rassat, Mihai Haita and Alex Woiten.
Adveev cruised to an impressive 6-0, 6-0 for the first completed singles contest at No. 3 singles. In his Penguins debut, Dasset collected a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the No. 4 spot. At No. 2, Rassat clinched the YSU win with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph. In his YSU debut, Haita picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles. At No. 6, Woiten claimed a 7-6 (2), 1-6, 10-7 win in the lone three-set match of the evening.
In doubles, the deciding match was at No. 1. After trailing 5-4 and 6-5, Wickwire and Rassat rallied to send the match to a tiebreaker. With that tied 3-3, the duo took a 6-4 advantage before a Wickwire winner at the net gave the Guins the point.
YSU's Onder Balci and Dasset won at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-3. CMU won at No. 3 doubles by a score of 6-3.
YSU returns to action on Sunday when it visits St. Bonaventure. First serve for the contest is set for Noon.
