Pittsburgh, Pa. – Sophomore Beau Brungard and redshirt freshman Cyrus Traugh connected on a pair of touchdown passes, but the Youngstown State football team fell to Pittsburgh, 73-17, on Saturday afternoon at Acrisure Stadium.
The Penguins close out non-conference play at 1-3 while Pittsburgh improves to 4-0.
Brungard finished with a career-high 233 yards on 18-for-28Â passing while Traugh caught a career-best four passes and led the team with a career-high 87 yards and two touchdowns. Max Tomczak recorded a team-high six receptions for 48 yards, and Ethan Wright had four catches for 30 yards.
Pitt scored on its first three possessions to take a 21-0 in the first quarter.
Andrew Lastovka drilled a 46-yard field goal to get the Penguins on the board at the 12:33 mark of the second quarter. Lastovka's boot capped an 11-play, 47-yard drive.
The Panthers scored a pair of touchdowns in the span of 2:26 to extend the lead to 35-3 midway through the second quarter.
Youngstown State answered with an 11-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 25-yard touchdown pass from Brungard to Traugh cut the lead to 35-10 at the 1:52 mark. The Panthers added another score just 17 seconds later to take a 42-10 lead at halftime.
Brungard and Traugh connected for the second time on a 44-yard touchdown with 9:23 to go in the third to cut the lead to 42-17.
The Panthers added a field goal and scored a touchdown late in the third quarter and added three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Youngstown State opens Missouri Valley Football Conference play at Missouri State, Saturday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
