Youngstown, Ohio – Youngstown State women's soccer Head Coach Brian Shrum announced that graduate student Lianna Van Sice and juniors Taylor Berry and Emma Rigone have been named team captains for the 2024 season.
"This year's captains epitomize the individual characteristics of grit, determination, resilience, hard work, and relentless effort," said Shrum. "These leaders are more determined than ever to guide our team back to the Horizon League tournament and continue the upward trajectory that previous classes have worked so hard to establish.
"Our captains not only demonstrate unparalleled dedication on the field, but they also embody the team values of Focus, Effort, Individual Seriousness, and Family in their daily lives. They set a high standard for themselves, their teammates, and the coaching staff, ensuring that everyone is committed to the collective goal of success."
Van Sice has appeared in 49 games over the last four seasons and has scored a pair of goals with six career assists. Last season, she posted two goals with three assists for a total of seven points.
Berry, a 2022 Horizon League All-Freshman Team selection, has appeared in 34 games with 27 starts. In her two seasons, Berry has scored seven goals with four assists for 18 total points. Last year, Berry tallied three goals and had three assists for nine points.
Rigone, a defender, has appeared in 36 games with 32 starts in her two years with the Penguins. She has one career goal with two career assists from her back-line position. In 2023, Rigone scored her first career goal and tallied an assist for three points.
The Penguins host Kent State in the 2024 season opener on Sunday, Aug. 18. Kickoff against the Golden Flashes is set for 1 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field.
