Milwaukee scored the final three runs of the game to rally for a 5-4 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team on Friday afternoon at Franklin Field in Franklin, Wis.
The Penguins held leads of 3-0, 3-2 and 4-2 before the Panthers scored twice in the fourth and once in the sixth to come back for the series-clinching win. Milwaukee topped YSU 6-3 in the Horizon League series opener on Friday at Frankin Field.
Seven different Penguins recorded a single hit as the visitors were bested in the hit column 9-7. Trey Law doubled and scored two runs while Brett Stanley, Joe Suarez and Matt Thompson each recorded an RBI double.
YSU starter Brandon Mikos was tagged with four runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits over four innings in a no-decision. Aidan English suffered the loss after surrendering one run on two hits in two innings of relief. Mitchell Seymour and Casey Marshalwitz each tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
The Penguins jumped in front with three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. Law hit a leadoff double and Stanley replaced him at second base with an RBI double. Ian Francis reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a two-out RBI double by Thompson, and Teddy Ruffner drove in Thompson with an RBI single.
The Panthers responded quickly with a pair of unearned runs in the home half of the first inning. Justin Hausser drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a double from Carson Hansen. Both base runners were able to score on a two-out throwing error to pull Milwaukee within 3-2.
YSU added a single run in the top of the second inning to take a 4-2 edge. Law reached on a fielder's choice and raced all the way home on a two-out RBI double down the right field line by Suarez.
The Panthers evened the score with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Zach Lane hit a leadoff single and Sean Tillmon followed with an RBI double down the left field line. Dallan Quigley advanced Tillmon 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt and Teige Lethert brought him home with a sacrifice fly to tie the contest at 4-4.
Milwaukee plated the game's deciding run in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 5-4 advantage. Tillmon hit a one-out single and Quigley followed with a walk to set up an RBI single to left field by Lethert.
MKE starter Adrian Montilva allowed four runs on five hits in two innings of work. Gavin Theis tossed four scoreless innings of relief to earn his third win while Johnny Kelliher pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his fifth save.
The Penguins will attempt to salvage the series finale on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
