Penguins Fall in Series Finale at Wright State

The Youngstown State baseball team fell to Wright State by a final score of 11-1 in the Horizon League series finale on Sunday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium in Dayton, Ohio.

The Raiders scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth to jump ahead, and they went on to add two runs each in the fifth and sixth to build a 5-0 advantage. YSU recorded a single tally in the top of the seventh before Wright State struck for six runs in the bottom half to pull away for the seven-inning victory and complete the three-game series sweep.

Trey Pancake hit a double and Brett Stanley singled while Alejandro Covas walked and scored a run for the Penguins.

YSU starter Sloan Ulrich suffered the loss after allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Nick Perez and Brandin Anderson each surrendered one run in two thirds of an inning while Casey Marshalwitz was responsible for four runs. Nolan Kubilus permitted two runs on two hits in the seventh inning.

Wright State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning as Andrew Patrick reached with a one-out single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Patrick Fultz.

The Raiders increased their lead to 3-0 with two runs on three hits in the home half of the fifth. Julian Greenwell hit a leadoff double and scored on an RBI double by Sammy Sass. Ben Vore brought home Sass with an RBI single to give Wright State a 3-0 edge.

Wright State pushed its lead to 5-0 with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Carson Clark drew a one-out walk and scored on an RBI single from Sass before Vore was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Youngstown State got on the board in the top of the seventh as Covas drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a wild pitch.

The Raiders responded with six runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh to pull away for the seven-inning win.

Wright State starter Chet Lax earned the victory after allowing one run on two hits over six innings of work.

The Penguins will begin a four-game homestand at Eastwood Field on Tuesday with a non-conference contest against Toledo at 5 p.m. Live audio will be available at YSNLive.com.
