West Lafayette, Ind. – The Youngstown State women's tennis team suffered a 4-2 defeat to Chicago State in the semifinals of the Horizon League Championships on Saturday evening at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
The match started at 6:30 p.m. outdoors and concluded at 10:05 p.m. indoors. The Guins battled throughout but came up just short against the Cougars.
The Cougars led 3-0, but the Guins pulled within 3-2 and were in close three-set contests at the end of the match.
In doubles, the decisive match came to the No. 1 spot. YSU's Line Greyling and Elinor Beazley won 6-4 at No. 3. At No. 1, the Cougars won 7-6 (4) to grab the lead.
In singles play, only two matches went straight sets.
Chicago State led 2-0 following a win at No. 2 and a three-set win at No. 4.
YSU picked up its first win of the match as Lorena Cedeno claimed a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win at No. 3. At No. 5, Lili Minich battled back for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win and get the Guins within 3-2.
The final two hard-fought matches came at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
At No. 1, CSU earned a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 win to clinch the semifinal victory. At No. 2, Lili Minich was in a back-and-forth 6-1, 3-6, 5-5 clash when the match was clinched.
