Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris outscored the Youngstown State lacrosse team 10-2 in the second half to come away with a 17-6 victory over the Penguins at Joe Walton Stadium on Saturday.
The Penguins fall to 0-14 on the season and 0-4 in Mid-American Conference play while the Colonials improve to 4-11 overall with a 3-2 conference record.
YSU was within one goal of the Colonials, 7-6, at the 10:32 mark of the third quarter, but the Colonials scored 10 unanswered goals to come away with the victory.
Freshmen Katie Grottenthaler and Lena Cox led the Penguins, each scoring two goals a piece. Grace Rund and Emma Hoffman each scored once while Ava Kreutzer delivered an assist.
Freshman goalie Paige Borkowski delivered double-digit saves for the ninth game this season, making 11. Defensively, Kayla Stecker grabbed three ground balls and caused three turnovers while Dany Emler delivered two of each.
Freshman Genna Cooke recorded a career-high five draw controls in the matchup.
Leading RMU was Colleen Tift who delivered an eight-point day on five goals and three assists. Also delivering hat tricks were Chelsea Coleman with four goals and Jenna Irwin with three. The Colonials outshot the Penguins 36-18.
Robert Morris came out to a 2-0 start over the Penguins on Coleman and Tifft's first goals of the day before Hoffman came from behind the cage for a score at the 11:13 mark of the first quarter to make the score 2-1. RMU closed out quarter one with an additional to goals to take an early 5-1 lead.
The Penguins would go on to score three goals to RMU's one early in the second-quarter to cut RMU's lead to one, 5-4. Cox sprinted around a Colonials' defender to make the score at the 14:17 mark. A few minutes later, Grottenthaler found the back of the net before Rund delivered a spinning goal with 9:10 to play in the first half. RMU scored the final two of the half to enter halftime with a 7-4 lead.
Right out of the gates in the third quarter, the Penguins scored two in a row to cut the Colonials' lead to one once again, 7-6, at the 10:32 mark of the third. Cox and Grottenthaler both delivered their seconds of the day in the sequence. RMU scored 10 additional goals to close out the game with a 17-6 victory.
YSU will host their final home game of the season on Sunday, April 21 against MAC-opponent Eastern Michigan as the Penguins honor seniors. First draw at Farmers National Bank Field is set for noon.
