Youngstown, Ohio – Paige Borkowski set the program's single-season saves record as the Youngstown State lacrosse team dropped a Mid-American Conference contest to Eastern Michigan, 18-11, on Sunday at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins fall to 0-15 on the season and 0-5 in MAC play while the Eagles improve to 7-7 overall with a 4-1 conference record.
Borkowski made 11 saves on the day to mark her 10th game this season with double-digit saves and move her season total to 170, surpassing Savannah Clarke's record of 167 saves set in 2022.
A trio of Penguins delivered multi-goal outings with Callie Vaudry, Katie Grottenthaler, and Grace Rund each scoring twice. Also finding the back of the net was Ally Garrett, Lena Cox, Brooke Peck, Genna Cooke, and Jade Shearer. Cox led the Penguins with two assists for three points on the day. Grottenthaler collected the most draw controls with three.
Both Kayla Stecker and Molly Sheridan grabbed three ground balls while Stecker also collected two draw controls. Grace Manser led the team in caused turnovers with two.
Leading EMU's scoring effort was Sydney Lawrence who scored eight goals and made five assists for 13 points.
The Penguins came out to a two-goal lead in the first quarter on goals by four different Penguins. First, Vaudry muscled through contact for the early score at the 10:02 mark of the first to make the score 1-1. Following an Eagles' score, YSU went on to score three in a row to make the score 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Shearer began the run with a free-position goal before Peck turned around and leaped to fire a shot into the net for the score. Cox then sprinted around multiple defenders for her 25th goal of the season.
EMU outscored the Penguins 5-1 in the second quarter to take a 7-5 lead into halftime. Grottenthaler found the back of the net unassisted at the 11:54 mark.
YSU exchanged goals with the Eagles at the start of the third with Garrett and Rund delivering scores but EMU went onto score five in a row to a take a 13-7 lead over the Penguins with 2:55 to play in the third.
The Penguins caught fire in the final two minutes scoring three goals. First, Vaudry scored her second before Grottenthaler slid through two defenders to fire a successful shot. Rund then fired a Cox pass into the net with two seconds left to make the score 14-10.
Following three EMU goals to open the final quarter, Cox connected with Cooke for the score at the 2:15 mark. The Eagles scored with just over a minute left to make the final score 18-11.
The Eagles outshot the Penguins 36-27 and won the draw control margin 24-7.
The Penguins will close out the season on the road against Akron on Sunday. First draw is set for 1 p.m. at InfoCision Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
