White Claims 21-7 Victory In Spring Game

The Youngstown State football team wrapped up spring drills with a hard-hitting Red vs. White Game on Saturday morning at a windy Stambaugh Stadium.

The White squad picked up a 21-7 win the contest that saw big plays by the offense and the defense.

The White squad took advantage of an early turnover to jump on top 7-0. After being stopped on a three and out, the White recovered a mishandled punt at the Red's 40-yard line.

On the first snap following the turnover, Ethan Wright found some daylight on the left side and ran 40 yards for a touchdown.

The defense's controlled the game the remainder of the first quarter.

The White team extended its lead to 14-0 in the second quarter moving 61 yards in nine plays. On the drive, QB Beau Brungard rushed for 26 yards and completed two passes for 32 yards, hitting Max Tomczak on a 20-yard toss and Joey Farthing for 12 yards. TB Stephan Byrd capped off the drive with a three-yards scoring run.

In the third quarter, the White tacked on another touchdown. QB Max Blanc found Farthing on a 30-yard touchdown toss to make the game 21-0. On the drive, Blanc had three completions for 45 yards as he engineered a six-play 51-yard drive.

The Red squad answered with a 10-play, 75-yard march led by QB Bryce Schondelmyer. Schondelmyer found Luke Hensley on a 24-yard touchdown pass on a 4th-and-12 play. On the drive he completed four passes for 58 yards.

The Red moved into White territory on its next opportunity, but the defense made a stop on a 4th-and-9 from the 32-yard line. The White squad ran out the clock to preserve the win.

For the game, Brungard was 9-of-17 passing for 89 yards while Blanc was 5-of-7 for 39 yards and Schondelmyer was 5-of-7 for 58 yards.

On the ground, QB Brady Shannon rushed 10 times for 52 yards while Caleb Mitchell had 29 yards on four rushes, DaShaun Whatley had eight rushes for 17 attempts and Jaden Gilbert had five carries for 25 yards.

The top receivers were Cyrus Traugh who had four catches for 44 yards, Farthing who had four grabs for 70 yards, Hensley who caught two passes for 30 yards and Alex McDonald who had two receptions for 16 yards.

Highlights for the defense included sacks by Keon Freeman, Bryson Hobbs and Michael Votius, a forced fumble by Mike Wells and a recovery by Devin Johnson. The defense's also broke up five pass attempts.
