The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team was defeated by Longwood, 16-10, on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins fall to 0-6 while Longwood picks up their first win of the season to move to 1-4.
Freshman Ava Kreutzer scored a career-high four goals to lead the Penguins, marking her second consecutive game with a hat trick of goals. She also made an assist for five points on the day. Both Lena Cox and Grace Rund found the back of the net twice while Ally Garrett and Emma Hoffman scored once. Also delivering assists were Molly Sheridan, Brooke Peck, and Garrett.
Kayla Stecker again led the Penguins defensively putting forth impressive numbers. She grabbed six ground balls and caused three turnovers while also recording a draw control. Leading in draw controls was Genna Cooke with four. Paige Borkowski made five saves while giving up 16 goals for a .273 save percentage.
Emily Cate Smith led the Lancers with three goals and four assists for seven points while two Lancers scored five points: Holly Hill and Riley McDonald. Hill scored three goals and made two assists while McDonald scored four with one assist.
The Penguins outshot Longwood, 28-25, but fell short at draw, collecting 11 while the Lancers grabbed 18.
After a quarter of play, Longwood and Youngstown State were tied 2-2 after Kreutzer and Cox scored their firsts of the game unassisted.
The high-scoring second quarter saw 12 combined goals for the teams. Longwood edged the Penguins with seven goals while the Penguins netted five.Â
After a quick goal by the Lancers' Smith to start the quarter, Hoffman fired a Garrett pass into the net at the 12:59 mark to make the score, 3-3. Longwood's McDonald answered before the Penguins scored two in a row to take a 5-4 lead over the Lancers with 9:57 before halftime. The two Penguin scores in less than two minutes were by Rund and Cox with Cox's goal assisted by Sheridan.
The Penguins and Lancers then exchanged goals with Kreutzer scoring her third to make the score 6-5 at the 6:55 mark of the second quarter. Longwood would score three of the last four goals of the half to make the score 9-7 after 30 minutes of play.Â
YSU couldn't find their groove in the second half as they were outscored by Longwood 7-3. Kreutzer scored two goals in the half while Garrett delivered her sole score of the afternoon with 2:34 remaining. The Lancers' slipped one past Borkowski with just three seconds to play to make the final score, 16-10.
Youngstown State will return to Farmers National Bank Field for a midweek matchup with George Washington. First draw is set for noon on Wednesday.
