The Youngstown State lacrosse team dropped a close decision, 14-11, to George Washington on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins fall to 0-7 while the Revolutionaries improve to 3-6.
YSU owned a 5-2 advantage after the first quarter in a contest that saw numerous lead changes. The game was tied 11-11 with four minutes remaining but GW scored the final three goals to take the victory.
Freshman Lena Cox led YSU with four points on two goals and two assists while three other Penguins found the back of the net twice: Katie Grottenthaler, Emma Hoffman, and Genna Cooke.
Seven different Penguins scored on the day with Ally Garrett, Grace Rund, and Brooke Peck each delivering a goal. The Penguins took 34 shots, the most by YSU in a game this season, while GW shot 33 times. YSU was narrowly edged by the Revolutionaries in the draw control margin, 15-14.
In goal, freshman Paige Borkowski recorded 12 saves while giving up 14 goals for a .462 save percentage. Grottenthaler led all players with five draw controls while Jocelyn Fike grabbed two ground balls. Kayla Stecker caused a turnover and grabbed a ground ball.
Emma Nowakowski and Desiree Kleberg led GW's scoring effort with Nowakowski scoring four goals and Kleberg delivering three. Kleberg also recorded two assists for a game-leading five points.
Five different Penguins found the back of the net in a strong first quarter by the Penguins. Grottenthaler scored her first of the game off a free-position shot before Cooke did the same at the 8:20 mark to make the score 2-1.
GW's Bailey Aaron answered with a score before YSU delivered three goals in a row with Rund, Peck, and Garrett scoring to own a 5-2 lead headed into the second quarter.
A high-scoring 10-goal second period saw the Revolutionaries take a 9-8 edge over the Penguins headed into halftime. GW opened the period with three in a row before Grottenthaler scored her second of the day with 9:54 to play until halftime, making the score 6-5.
The Revolutionaries scored another two before the Penguins split the final four goals with GW as Hoffman and Cox delivered unassisted scores to make the score 9-8 after the first 30 minutes of play.
GW scored the first two goals of the second half before Cox scored her second of the day at the 4:30 mark of the third quarter to make the score 11-9.
YSU scored two goals to open the final period and tie the score at 11-11 with 8:06 to play in the game. To tie it, Cooke and Hoffman both scored their second with Hoffman getting a helping hand from Cox on her score.
The Revolutionaries scored the final three goals beginning at the 3:54 mark of the fourth quarter.
Youngstown State will close out its homestand, opening Mid-American Conference play against Kent State on Sunday. First draw at Farmers National Bank Field is set for noon.
