Georgia Tech rallied late from a three-run deficit to come back and defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 15-5 in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta, Ga.
The Penguins scored twice in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 lead before the Yellow Jackets cut the deficit in half with a single run in the bottom of the third. YSU added single tallies in the fourth and fifth to build a 4-1 advantage.
Georgia Tech plated three runs in the home half of the sixth to even the score at 4-4. After the Guins regained the lead with one run in the seventh, the Yellow Jackets answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-5 edge. Georgia Tech added six runs in the eighth to produce the final margin.
Youngstown State falls to 0-11 on the season while Georgia Tech improves to 8-4.
Trey Law, Derrick Tarpley Jr. and Matt Thompson had two hits apiece while Brett Stanley drove in a pair of runs.
YSU starter Jacob Gehring allowed four runs on six hits with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings in a no-decision. The junior right-hander retired the side in order in the first and fourth frames while blanking the Yellow Jackets in four different innings. Brandin Anderson was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs in the seventh.
Stanley and Law each recorded an RBI single in the top of the second as the Penguins took a 2-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI groundout by Matthew Ellis.
Law hit a two-out single and scored on an RBI double by Tarpley Jr. in the top of the fourth to push YSU's lead to 3-1. In the top of the fifth, Alejandro Covas was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Stanley to give the Penguins a 4-1 advantage.
Georgia Tech plated three runs on four hits in the home half of the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. Ellis hit a solo home run to leadoff the inning before Cam Jones and Parker Brosius each delivered an RBI single.
YSU regained a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh as Thompson hit a leadoff double and scored on an RBI groundout by Trey Pancake.
The Yellow Jackets responded with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to move in front 9-5. Demitri Diamant drew a leadoff walk and scored on a wild pitch, Mike Becchetti hit a two-run double and Brosius added a two-run single.
Georgia Tech tacked on six runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth. Ellis and Becchetti recorded RBI singles, Carsten Sabathia drew a bases-loaded walk and Brosius drove in two runs with a double.
Georgia Tech starter Camron Hill allowed three runs on eight hits with four punch outs over 3.2 innings. Mason Patel was awarded the victory after permitting two runs on two hits with five strikeouts over 4.1 innings of relief.
