Cleveland, Ohio – The Youngstown State women's tennis team opened Horizon League play with a 5-2 defeat to Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
The Penguins nearly claimed the doubles point to open the match. At No. 2, Julia Marko and Lorena Cedeno even won 6-3 after CSU had won 6-1 at No. 3. At No. 1, Eliska Masarikova and Maria Oliveira battled before dropping a 7-6 (2) decision.
In singles play, YSU won in three sets at No. 2 and No. 6. At No. 2, Marko won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 while at No. 5, Yeseniiia Ovcharova rallied for a 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3) win. The Vikings won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 5, but needed three sets for wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
The Penguins return to action next weekend when they travel to Chicago State and Milwaukee.
