Kent State scored multiple runs in five different innings in route to a 27-0 win over the Youngstown State baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium in Kent, Ohio.
The Golden Flashes led 3-0 after two innings before striking for five runs in the third and four in the fourth. Kent State added six runs in the fifth and nine in the sixth on its way to the seven-inning midweek victory.
Trey Law, Eli Brown, Brett Stanley and Joe Suarez each singled for the Penguins offensively.
YSU starter Aidan English suffered the loss after allowing five runs, four of them earned, on four hits in two innings on the mound. Nolan Kubilus was responsible for three runs on two hits and three walks in two thirds of an inning while Gavin Wilms permitted four runs on four hits in one inning of work. Cam Marshalwitz surrendered six runs on eight hits in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. Mitchell Seymour tossed two thirds of an inning in his first-career appearance.
The Golden Flashes took an early 1-0 lead with a single tally in the bottom of the first inning. Josh Johnson was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a throwing error after swiping second and third. Kent State pushed across a pair of runs in the home half of the second on a two-out, two-run double by Ripken Reese.
The Golden Flashes extended their advantage to 8-0 with five runs in the bottom of the third. Johnson hit a leadoff single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Dom Kibler. Connor Ashby and Reese drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks before a two-out, two-run single by Kyle Jackson.
Kent State pushed its lead to 12-0 with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. Brody Williams delivered an RBI single before a three-run home run by Kolton Schaller. The Golden Flashes went on score six times in the fifth and nine times in the sixth to produce the final margin.
Kent State starter Rocco Bernadina was awarded the victory after allowing one hit and fanning four batters over three innings. Five different Golden Flashes relievers combined to allow three hits over four scoreless innings of relief.
Youngstown State will conclude its early-season road stretch on Wednesday with a non-conference contest at Pitt. First pitch at Charles L. Cost Field is slated for 3 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and YSNLive.com.
